Don’t Kill the Fever!

One of the most common ways that endothermic animals (such as the Homo sapiens) deal with fungal or bacterial invaders is through production of a fever.  Elevated temperatures created within our tissues represent the bodies’ attempt to kill off offending organisms, although a fever is certainly not without its cost to our emotional well-being.  Any parent who has sat at the bedside of infant children overnight as they battle a high fever can empathize that this physiological reaction can be as scary as the bacterial or fungal invaders!  The fever is essentially our bodies’ way of fighting back against the infections that come into it, so in many cases a little fever is actually a good thing.  It shows that our body is responding appropriately to a foreign invader, and that said invader will soon fall victim to the uncomfortable … Read More »
